Recipes For Winter Health

Do you ever wonder if you could do more to fight off the winter ick? Or what else you can do to fight it once it gets you? It happens to the best of us, so here are some of our favorite, tried and true herbal protocols for getting well and staying well.

Ginger-Garlic Lemonade

Herbalists' love this one! Consumed at the onset of a cold, while taking a very hot bath, this remedy helps to elevate the body's core temperature, supporting the process of diaphoresis (or sweating) and helping to stimulate white blood cell activity. After a hot bath, wrap-up in warm and cozy clothing, get into bed and rest. You'll feel hot and sweaty for a while, but much better in the morning!

Ingredients:

2-4 cloves of fresh garlic
1-quart water
2-4 quarter sized slices of fresh ginger root
juice of 1 fresh lemon
maple syrup/honey to taste (honey only for children over 1 yr. old)

Directions: Chop or crush garlic, slice ginger and add to 1 quart of water. Bring to a boil, simmer 5 minutes, and turn off the heat. Add honey/maple syrup and lemon juice. Drink freely!

Immune Soup

5 cloves chopped garlic
1 inch chopped ginger
8-10 sliced shitake mushrooms
4 scallions sliced with greens
1 large carrot, chopped
1 medium sweet potato, chopped
1/2 bunch kale, chopped
1 handful kelp seaweed
2 quarts water
4 astragalus root pieces/sticks
1-2 cups cooked brown rice (optional)

Directions: Simmer: water, ginger, garlic and astragalus for 10 minutes covered. Add carrots, sweet potato, scallions and mushrooms, simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off heat; add kale, seaweed and miso. ENJOY!

Avocado

Healing Through Healthy Eating

• Add oils rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids (avocado, flax, olive, evening primrose, fish). This is an Ayurvedic technique used when beginning to cleanse the body. The moisturizing qualities of these oils help to nourish the intestinal tract so that absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste products can happen smoothly. This is essential now that the weather is cold and the air is dry.

• Drink more water!! We evaporate several quarts of water daily even if we are not visibly sweating. Drink at least 3 quarts of purified water every day. Sometimes we think we are hungry when our bodies are actually thirsty!

• Eat more greens! Kale, chard, collards, parsley and so many more of these veggies are available. Incredibly abundant in vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, and B vitamins-this addition to your diet is the most important piece. If this past holiday season left you feeling run down and depleted, a daily dose of dark leafy greens will boost your serotonin levels, helping both your energy level and your mood. Sautee your greens with the above oils and be sure to add lots of garlic and ginger for stronger winter immunity!

Under the Weather Remedy

Under the Weather: A Good Wintertime Friend

Use "Under the Weather" at the onset, and for the duration of a head cold, bacterial or viral infection. This formula stimulates the immune system and helps ease uncomfortable cold and flu symptoms. It eases body ache and fever while promoting mucus membrane health and the elimination of waste products. Under the Weather is a liquid herbal extract that supports the body's own natural defenses. We make it! To see a list of all of the herbal extracts we make for the cold and flu season, click here.
