Soothing Oats

These days it seems we all have hectic lifestyles with many responsibilities and little free time. Feeling overwhelmed can really take its toll on the body and spirit. Stressed out? Oats may be the help you need.

Oat seed is a tonic and nutritive herb especially appropriate for feeding, strengthening and balancing the nervous system. As a soothing herb, fresh Oat seed tincture is good for stress, nervous debility, insomnia, exhaustion and depression. Use it for adrenal burnout and grumpiness. Used with Devil's Club and Skullcap, Oats can help relieve symptoms when trying to quit cigarettes, coffee, and other stimulating substances. Because it is a tonic herb, Oats can be taken on a long-term basis. It can be used as a calming and soothing herb for nervous or hyper children. The fresh, milky oat seeds are the most medicinal and potent part of the plant. They are most easily available as a fresh plant liquid extract.

As a tea or capsule, dry Oat straw is a rich mineral source. It is high in calcium, chromium, magnesium, silicon, sodium and vitamin B. Use Oat straw with Alfalfa, Raspberry, Horsetail and Nettles as a whole body nourishing tea. And remember, eating your oatmeal really is good for you!

Externally, Oats are anti-inflammatory and soothing to the skin. Use oatmeal in a bath to help relieve sunburn, rashes, bug bites, allergic reactions and chicken pox.

Oats grow easily from seed and should be planted in the early spring. Grow as you would other grasses, except don't mow them as they need to go to seed.

Taking Oat seed in excess can be irritating to the nervous system and may cause headaches. A typical dosage is 10 - 20 drops of the fresh seed extract up to 4 times a day. To make a tea, use 1/4-ounce dry herb per cup of hot water.
