Skullcap: a Gentle Relaxer

Back >>

Skullcap is smaller than most mints standing an average of 18 inches tall. It has square stems and opposite lanceolate leaves. The flowers are what help differentiate Skullcap from the other mints. They are small, bright blue and grow from stems off the axils of the upper leaves. The seedpods look like a cap, which is how this herb got its name. They bloom form late spring to midsummer.

Skullcap likes rich moist soil with full sun to partial shade. A pH of neutral to slightly alkaline is preferable. The roots are racemes and will spread to form a colony. Space plants about six inches apart.

Skullcap has durable roots and can be harvested several times a year. The roots have the same medicinal properties as the aerial parts. Skullcap is soluble in alcohol or hot water. To make a tea, use one teaspoon of the dried herb per cup of water. Drink up to three cups per day. Two "oo" capsules can be taken three times a day. I prefer the fresh plant tincture as a medicine. Take 20 - 60 drops tincture up to three times a day.

Skullcap works as a nervine on the central nervous system (CNS). It supports the CNS making it helpful for stress, “mind chatter”, exhaustion and relaxing nervous tension. As a brain tonic Skullcap is useful to calm the mind. It is good for nervous system issues of a chronic or mild nature such as fear, nervous headaches, depression and abnormal sensitivities to light and touch. Skullcap combines well with Chamomile, Valerian or Passion Flower for the nervous system. As a mild sedative it is useful in relieving insomnia and encouraging a natural sleep.

It can help with the pain associated with multiple sclerosis or sciatica. Skullcap is also helpful for menstrual cramps and PMS. Skullcap is excellent to use when weaning from addictions. Use it with American Ginseng and Wild Oats in frequent doses (every one to two hours) to help withdrawals from barbiturates, valium, and alcoholism.

An overdose of Skullcap herb can cause giddiness, stupor, twitching and confusion. Pregnant women should not use Skullcap root.
